The originally planned theme for
the third PICES Summer School on “Satellite
oceanography for the Earth Environment”
will be organized from August 23–27, 2009, in Seoul, Korea,
and its timing is in line with the launching of a Korean satellite.
In this course, principles and applications in three major areas
(optical, infra-red and microwave) of satellite oceanography will
be introduced to students who have little experience in the field
(focus will be on Asian countries). In addition to lectures and
seminars, hands-on training of image processing will be provided.
The major funding for the school will be provided by various Korean
agencies. PICES will provide support for 1 foreign lecturer and
5 non-Korean students. The summary report of the school will is
published in PICES
Press (Vol. 18, No. 1).
The second PICES Summer School on “Ecosystem-Based
Management” was held on August 22-25, 2008, in Hakodate,
Japan. Fifty students and early career scientists from China, Japan,
Korea, Russia and U.S.A. attended the School. Ecosystem-based management
(EBM) is an integrated approach to management that considers the
entire ecosystem, including humans. The goal
of EBM is to maintain an ecosystem in a healthy, productive and
resilient condition so that it can provide the services humans want
and need. The summary report of the school will is published in
PICES
Press (Vol. 17, No. 1).
The first PICES Summer School on "Ocean
circulation and ecosystem modeling"
was organized from August 23-25, 2006, Busan, Korea. The main
objective of the summer school was to teach and motivate
postgraduate students, early-career scientists, and other professionals
who will be the principal users of numerical models. The three-day
summer school summarized our present knowledge of circulation and
ecosystem modeling, and introduced numerical models that can be
used and applied in various fields of oceanography. Report on the
first PICES Summer School is published in PICES
