PICES Proposed Themes for Future Integrative Science Program(s)

Development of the next major integrative program of PICES was first discussed at the 2003 inter-sessional Science Board/Governing Council meeting (PICES Press Vol. 11, No. 2). At the 2005 inter-sessional meeting, Governing Council agreed with a Science Board recommendation to establish a Study Group to develop ideas for one or more new integrative scientific program(s) to be undertaken by scientists in PICES member countries.

The first 2 steps in the Terms of Reference of the Study Group on Future Integrative Scientific Program(s) were accomplished prior to, or at, PICES XIV (October 2005, Vladivostok, Russia). Proposed themes for the new program were discussed by the Study Group at a Special Meeting held during PICES XIV.

Below are 6 themes that have been submitted, followed by a Report on Future Integrative Scientific Program(s) resulting from the Special Meeting, presented to Governing Council, and the PICES community at the closing session of PICES XIV.

[print all Proposed Themes (1-6) in one document: pdf, doc]

    Theme 1
Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management and Sustainable Use

    Theme 2
North Pacific Marine Ecosystem Response to Global Change

    Theme 3
A New Integrative Scientific Program Built upon the Foundations of CCCC

    Theme 4
    North Pacific Ocean Sustainability

    Theme 5
Coastal Ocean Ecosystems - The Human Dimension and Climate

    Theme 6
Status and Trends in Marine Biodiversity

Report on Future Integrative Scientific Program(s)

The scientific community is invited to review the 6 themes and provide comments or suggestions to any or all of the Study Group members. If the proposed themes do not encompass some important aspect of marine science, the group welcomes and encourages scientists to develop new ideas for an integrative program and share these with the Study Group.

Deadline for responses or theme submissions is March 1, 2006.
